Advent candle reading

The past weeks, we have lighted the first candle, the candle of hope, the second candle the candle of peace.  Today, we light the third candle.

The third candle is pink and symbolizes joy. It is Otherwise known as the “Shepherds’ Candle.”
This third candle of Advent reflects the joy the shepherds experienced when they received the
good news about Christ’s birth. During the middle of the night, the shepherds
encountered angels who revealed to them the greatest event in human history up to that
—the birth of the Messiah. The shepherds and wise men believed the angels and they
experienced the great gladness of worshiping their Messiah.
Those who knew him and recognized him were overjoyed at the coming of Jesus. They saw
the prophecies fulfilled and their fear was replaced with happiness as they gazed on the face
of the one who would be their Savior. They trusted in God’s promises and their hearts were
filled with gladness as they watched His loving-kindness manifested in the face of a baby
in a lowly manger. We should all believe the Word of God about Christ so that we can also experience the joy of God’s grace given to us through His Son.

Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds. – Ps. 72:18

Light the Candle

Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, this third week of Advent, let us remember that the good news of Jesus’ birth has the power to bring us great joy this Christmas season. Our joy isn’t dependent on what is going on in life,
in our world, or the people that we are with. It doesn’t depend on the gi]s we give or the gi]s
we find under the tree. No earthly thing can ever give us complete joy. Our joy comes from
you, and the joy that flooded the hearts of the shepherds, the angels, the wise men, the hosts
of heaven, and Mary and Joseph is the same joy that has the power to fill our hearts with
rejoicing. Flood our hearts with joy this Advent season as we reflect on the good news of Jesus’ birth. In
His precious name we pray. Amen
